Palm Coast, FL (MMD Newswire) July 4, 2012 -- In recognition of his service to the elderly, attorney Scott A. Selis has been awarded the Charlotte Brayer Public Service Award by the Elder Law Section of the Florida Bar. Each year, the Elder Law Section presents the Charlotte Brayer award to the Florida Elder Law attorney whose volunteerism significantly helps the elderly. Attorney Selis was selected because his efforts as legislative chair of the Florida Bar Elder Law Section kept the issues affecting Florida's elderly and disabled in front of the public and the legislature in a year when advocating for Florida's most vulnerable was a difficult position to advance.
The award is named for Charlotte Brayer, who was born in 1922 in Rochester, New York. Ms. Brayer earned both a bachelor's and a master's degree from the University of Rochester, and for 31 years worked as an educator, eventually becoming superintendent of schools in Attica, New York. At age 62, Ms. Brayer was admitted to the Florida State University College of Law, earning her J.D. in 1987 at age 64. She opened a law office in Tallahassee, where the majority of her practice was pro bono for participants of the senior center and clients of Legal Services of North Florida. She was a charter and founding member of The Florida Bar Elder Law Committee (now the Elder Law Section). At her death in 1998 at age 75, Ms. Brayer left behind a rich legacy of commitment, dedication, and service to the elderly and elder law.
Award recipient Scott Selis is a graduate of Florida State University and Stetson University College of Law. He is a partner in the Palm Coast law firm of Chiumento Selis Dwyer, where he specializes in the complicated area of long-term care for the elderly. In his practice, he creates customized plans to protect his clients' life savings and help them obtain government benefits to pay the costs of long-term care. He is accredited by Medicaid Practice Systems to teach Medicaid Planning, and he serves on the Medicaid and Legislative Committees of the Elder Law Section of the Florida Bar. He is a member of an advisory panel of the Florida Department of Children & Families to improve Medicaid services to disabled adults and the elderly. Mr. Selis is a member of the leading professional organizations associated with elder law, including Elder Counsel, Medicaid Practice Systems, National Association of Elder Law Attorneys, and Elder Law Answers.
