WAGENINGEN, Netherlands (MMD Newswire) March 8, 2010 -- In Stop Growth Now!!, author Arie Kamphorst takes a generalist's approach to saving the global environment.
Referencing information published by specialists of diverse backgrounds, Kamphorst declares in his book that the incessant growth of the world economy and of the world population will lead to a progressive deterioration of the global environment. He goes on to note that a shortage of energy, food, water, minerals and other basic commodities, could escalate national and international tensions ultimately leading to wars. Kamphorst also suggests that shortages of energy can be prevented by stopping the growth of the economy in Western countries, by cutting down on energy consumption, and by using alternative sources of energy.
Additionally, Kamphorst seeks to illustrate how many of the technical measures proposed by politicians to reduce the emissions of carbon-dioxide, such as the large-scale introduction of nuclear energy; the injection of produced carbon dioxide into empty gas fields; the use of bio-fuels; and even the introduction of windmills on land are harmful.
"A much more favorable contribution to a healthy environment would be to stop the growth of the world economy and the world population," Kamphorst says. "I feel that politicians and journalists tend to downplay the seriousness of the emerging problems, and that many scientists and engineers suggest that there are easy solutions to problems in the field of their specialization. An independent view is needed, and I have one to offer."
