Architectural Fiberglass to make a Highly Visible Statement atop the Trump Tower in Chicago

Porta Fiberglass, Inc. of Edgewater, FL is building the 200 ft. fiberglass spire to top the Trump International Hotel and Tower in Chicago.  The company was selected by Tower Innovations, Inc. of  Newburgh, Indiana in their role as a subcontractor to Bovis Land Lease of Chicago which is overseeing much of the  Trump Hotel and Tower project.  Tower Innovations is building the metal tower which will support the fiberglass covering.

Known for its work on building the SkyCell, a 24 ft. diameter “donut” shaped fiberglass room that sits at the 900 foot level on 1000 ft. transmission towers, the Edgewater firm was selected based on that history and a sample of its fiberglass workmanship submitted with its proposal.

Architectural fiberglass is seeing increasing use as a durable, basically weatherproof, and attractive material in the commercial building industry.  Architects are becoming increasingly aware of its value.

The fiberglass spire, which reaches about 200 feet, has been a special challenge beginning with the engineering, design, and then creation of multiple plugs, then molds, then finished parts.

The Trump International Hotel and Tower will stand 11,133 feet tall when completed with the spire installed.  Some completed parts have already been shipped.
