Architect’s Vision to Fuse Art and Function Shapes the Heart of Dos Lagos in Corona, California

Corona, CA – In America’s great cities, architecture provides an art form that can be walked through and experienced daily. This art has traditionally been designed to inspire us, to celebrate man’s highest potential by bringing together engineering and art to transform functional spaces to beautiful creations.

But in our suburban communities, the functional side of architecture has traditionally been the rule. One architect seeks to change that, Norberto Nardi has a vision of transforming components of the functional master planned community to artistic expressions that inspire young and old.

With the opening this Thursday of Dos Lagos, Architect Norberto F. Nardi has provided the artistic vision for the central feature of Dos Lagos, a 12-acre park with two lakes designed to be the heart and soul of this master planned development. In collaboration with veteran landscape architect, Ken Kammeyer, Nardi was able to gracefully interpret master developer Ali Sahabi’s grand scheme for a new kind of suburban community. “My overall design goal as to successfully connect people and architecture to nature, while expressing a celebration of community and history, using contemporary forms and spaces,” remarked Nardi. “Creating a sense of place and a whole new community is more than sequentially planning areas; it is the harmony achieved among all project components.”

The community of Dos Lagos is located south of Highway 91 and adjacent to Interstate 15 in Corona, California. The 543-acre mixed-use development includes various types of land uses including residential, entertainment, recreational, commercial, ospitality, light industrial, and open space preserve. Within that area, the goal was to harmonize the land uses and create a focal point for the community. The resulting “Heart” is the centerpiece of the community and consists of 12 acres of privately maintained open recreational and entertainment area. Five restaurant pads form a crescent around the two lakes.

Enter architect Nardi, whose other work includes landmark university and hospitality buildings in Southern California, Louisiana, and Latin America. His architectural design for the park brings a place for this diverse community to be inspired both by nature and art. Nardi Associates has adeptly conceived and executed a built environment that is art that can be experienced by walking through it, and also in this case, over it. One of the most creative features of this design is a suspension bridge that traverses the two lakes. The butterfly-shaped lakes are on different elevations and separated by a 9-foot waterfall, which can be viewed by pedestrians on the suspension bridge.

The main architectural feature of Dos Lagos is the pedestrian promenade. With its snake-like form stretched across the center circle of this community center and its tail curling to embrace the amphitheatre and stage, the pedestrian promenade architecturally brings the community together. Reminiscent of the Ponte Vecchio, community life is produced within the on-grade portions of the pedestrian promenade through intimate seating alcoves, water features, dramatic vistas, and concession kiosks. The pedestrian promenade is shaded by a garden armature formed by 91 steel ribs wrapped in 2” diameter iron bamboo. Varieties of American roses will climb the inside, harmonizing the built environment with nature. This flowing trellis undulates, creating shade patterns and visual effects that will change as the sun swings from east to west and shifts with the seasons. The bridge section of the promenade is aligned to true north and serves as a sundial gnomon.
