Angel Food Ministries Highlighted at White House Compassion in Action Roundtable Focusing on Combating Hunger at Home and Abroad
WASHINGTON, D.C. – The White House Office of Faith-Based and Community Initiatives (OFBCI) today convened a Compassion in Action policy roundtable, highlighting innovative policies and partnerships to alleviate hunger in the U.S. Hosted by OFBCI Deputy Director Jedd Medefind and keynoted by U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Secretary Ed Schafer, today’s event explored effective models for Federal collaboration with faith-based and community organizations to provide those in need across America with access to food, a healthful diet and nutrition education.
"The USDA has a long history of working with faith-based and community groups. These organizations play a vital role in fighting hunger because they know the clients, know neighborhoods, and know the needs," said Secretary of Agriculture Ed Schafer.
Convening policymakers, business leaders, philanthropists, government officials and others, today’s Compassion in Action roundtable featured promising public-private partnerships with hunger relief organizations. Among the featured speakers discussing domestic projects were representatives from Angel Food Ministries, East Texas Food Bank and Catholic Charities USA. Leaders from International Orthodox Christian Charities, Planet Aid and World Vision focused on their actions to combat hunger overseas. Pastor Joe Wingo, Founder and CEO of Angel Food Ministries, addressed the roundtable sharing with them how the Angel Food Ministries Program works across the country.
Angel Food Ministries is a non-profit non denominational food relief ministry out of Monroe, Georgia. Every month almost 2.5 million people are fed using the Angel Food Ministries program. Angel Food distributes food across 35 States and distributes food to 4500 host sites throughout those states every month. It is the desire of Angel Food Ministries to provide a hand up to the 37 million people who go without adequate food each year. There are no pre-qualifications to take part in Angel Food because Angel Food Ministries is open to everyone.
Angel Food Ministries partners with the USDA, and is an active participant in the Food Stamp Program. Angel Food Ministries is currently working on technology to streamline the Food Stamp processing process in cooperation with the USDA.
