ANGEL FOOD MINISTRIES PROVIDING MUCH-NEEDED FOOD RELIEF FOR OKLAHOMANS

Oklahoma Is Among Nation's Hungriest  States

OKLAHOMA CITY – During 2007, more than 20,000 families in Oklahoma received food-relief each month through Angel Food Ministries (AFM), a non-profit, non denominational, national food-relief organization. April 10, 2008, AFM will be sponsoring a dinner in honor of the accomplishments of its 175 Oklahoma distribution sites and discuss strategy to reach more Oklahomans going forward, 14.6 percent of whom are food insecure according to a Jan. 2008 report by the Oklahoma Task Force on Hunger.

An estimated 35.5 million Americans are food insecure; Oklahoma ranks as one of the nation’s hungriest states. Many existing nutrition programs are reported to be under-utilized in Oklahoma. Currently, AFM is in partnership with the USDA and among other things, is working toward raising awareness about eligibility and participation in the Food Stamp program.

Approximately 2.5 million people from all socioeconomic backgrounds participate in Angel Food program each month. With 4500 host sites in 35 states, Angel Food is helping middle-class Americans stretch their food dollar; is providing struggling families with much needed food-relief; and is impacting communities nationwide. The program is designed to provide a “hand-up” rather than a “hand-out,” enabling all who participate to receive a protein-rich diet while maintaining a sense of dignity.

By purchasing top quality food at significant volume discounts and utilizing a volunteer network, Angel Food Ministries is able to pass on substantial savings to consumers. A $30 box of Angel Food retails for approximately $65. Each box contains nutritious fresh and frozen products and assists in feeding a family of four for one week or a single person for almost a month. There are no pre-qualifications to purchase Angel Food. Anyone can participate.

The Angel Food program also contributes $1 per box distributed to local host site churches. In 2006, Angel Food Ministries gave $6 million to host sites for benevolent outreach in their communities.

Founder and CEO of Angel Food Ministries, Pastor Joe Wingo who recently addressed the White House Faith-Based Initiatives Roundtable about AFM’s continued commitment to help alleviate hunger by providing a “hand-up” and not a “hand-out” will keynote the April 10th catered dinner event at 6:30 p.m. at the Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, located at 308 NW 164th in Edmond, OK.
