Norfolk, VA (MMD Newswire) September 6, 2012 -- On September 6, songwriters will gather for the first of two songwriter events at southeastern Virginia venues to compete for a slot to play on the main stage at the 7th Annual Smithfield Music's Aiken & Friends Fest. Songwriters from coastal Virginia are encouraged to showcase their original songs at the Victorian Station in Hampton on Thursday, September 6 and at Cozzy's Comedy Club in Newport News on Thursday, September 13.

The Songwriter Spotlight was added to Smithfield Music's Aiken & Friends music festival in 2010 as a way to celebrate the songwriters who may not make music their career but excel with their writing. Winners will perform their original music as solos and duos as part of the festival on Saturday, September 29 in Smithfield, VA.

Smithfield Music's Aiken and Friends Fest is an Americana/roots music festival, or "celebration of songwriters," that benefits youth music education through Smithfield Music, originally founded by Americana songwriter and artist Mike Aiken. The festival focuses on education and songwriting, and the proceeds generated go to help children receive music lessons, instruments, and scholarships. The 7th Annual will be September 28-29, 2012 along the Pagan river in Smithfield, VA.
