This Husband And Wife Created a Business For Those Who Give The Most To Others and Ask The Least For Themselves -- Volunteers
Boca Raton, FL – Feb. 5, 2007 – Couple forms unique company for volunteers based on ideas they got from volunteering with their children.
Rick and Iris Hyman had their first child in 1981. As their family grew, they were involved in volunteer projects in the schools, community projects and faith based volunteer programs. Working as volunteers themselves with their children and the parents of their children’s friends gave them an idea for a business they have pursued for over twenty years.
Iris soon realized that all the volunteers looked forward to the end of the year luncheons, banquets and recognition events – she spoke with Directors of many of the projects about gifts for the volunteers. Iris says, “after speaking with many of our volunteer directors, I was told it was difficult to show appreciation and give gifts to the volunteers due to tight budgets, and that there were no nice gifts out there for volunteers that were really affordable.”
In 1985, with a background in jewelry making and dozens of volunteer projects under their belt, she and her husband, Rick, set out to create a line of special “Thank You Gifts” for volunteers that was beautiful and would sell for one to two dollars each. Rick is quick to point out, “it was our children who led us to involvement in all the volunteer projects and their needs that gave us the inspiration to work at this for over twenty years, even when it looked like we could never make a living at it!”
They started with beautiful lapel pins, key chains, bookmarks, etc. especially for volunteers, using such themes as “Volunteers Are Stars,” “Volunteers Touch The Heart,” “Volunteers Are a Treasure,” and “Volunteers Help Hold The World Together.”
Hence, Creative Designs & Marketing, Inc. was formed and they began to develop a website
www.VolunteerGifts.com for volunteer organizations to service the needs of schools, civic organizations, senior groups, associations, and faith based organizations. Nonprofits of all shapes, sizes and forms began getting in touch and loved their products. Now a simple click of the mouse will take you to a website chock full of gifts and products for volunteer organizations.
With the help of Iris’s father, Jerome, an accomplished artist and designer himself, they created beautiful, original hand done artwork and used Jerome’s designs on the volunteer products. The end result was a line that has reached over 500 unique items today, with emphasis on prices of one dollar to five dollars to fit the tight constraints of volunteer budgets. In addition, all of their children, Cecile, David, and Michael worked with their parents and helped with the company as they grew up, giving them a strong sense of the importance of community involvement and volunteerism.
Their clients now include hundreds of nonprofit organizations and membership associations of all types and sizes. Iris says they have been honored to work with nonprofit organizations including hospitals, chapters of “American Red Cross” “Girl Scouts,” “Retired Senior Volunteer Programs,” “Catholic Charities,” hospices, elementary schools, middle schools, as well as many major colleges and universities.
After twenty years of belief in their idea combined with hard work, Rick and Iris can be proud of a company that serves a good cause, and at the same time allows them to make a living together, doing what they love most – helping service those who give so much and ask so little – VOLUNTEERS. Visit
