FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE 25 Cents To End Hunger and Global Diseases Human.org Urges People Worldwide to Mail a Coin to Show Support for a Growing International Solution to Hunger and Disease. December 6, 2006 - A new Web site, Human.org, is asking people around the world to mail a symbolic coin to their government along with a letter to help end hunger and preventable diseases. “A lot of people want to do what they can to end hunger, AIDS, malaria and other diseases caused by poverty,” says John Breen, founder of Human.org. “Here they can play a key role in a practical, international solution.” More than 20 of the world’s wealthiest countries including the United States, Great Britain, Germany, France and Japan have agreed to make concrete efforts to give 0.7% of national income to poor countries. That's roughly $195 billion a year. But sometimes politicians and governments need a push to make good on their commitments. The letters and coins, Breen explains, help to give world leaders the popular support they need to take this bold action. Human.org Is Born Human.org details the plight of the people around the world who die from hunger and preventable diseases. According to the site, the United Nations estimates the number at a staggering 25,000 people each day from the effects of hunger alone. Breen, who won a Webby Award in 2000 for the Hunger Site, created Human.org with animated world maps that flash symbolic names and faces of dead men, women and children to help visitors visualize how often real lives are being lost. The mothers. The fathers. The sons and daughters. Taking Action Is As Simple As 1, 2, 3 Human.org makes it easy for average people to do their part. And it's as simple as 1, 2, 3. 1. Visit Human.org to learn more about world hunger and preventable diseases. 2. Print out a short letter from the Web site to send to your government. The letter is translated into 12 languages. 3. Enclose a coin (25 cents suggested) and mail it. “If enough people from enough countries mail enough letters,” says Breen, “the governments will do this. They are all democracies.” For more information, please visit www.human.org . About the founder: John Breen is a 49-year-old computer programmer. He lives in Bloomington, Indiana, with his wife and two children. In 1999 Breen founded the Hunger Site, the Internet’s first click-to-donate site.
