2008 Marks a 20 Year Milestone for the Center for Urban Biblical Ministry
April 24, 2008

Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania -- April 24, 2008 -- The Center for Urban Biblical Ministry, an urban outreach of Geneva College, is proud to announce its twentieth year as one of the leading accredited institutions of higher learning, offering degrees in Christian Ministry and Business Administration in the Greater Pittsburgh area. In an era when smaller Biblically-based institutions come and go, CUBM has achieved two decades of innovation and steady growth. The college will commemorate the occasion with a number of public, educational, and promotional events throughout the next eight months.

CUBM began operations in 1988, when a group of visionary urban church leaders wanted to provide formal education and credentialing for church ministers and lay leaders. Over the years, the student body has grown in diversity and size and today the student body is culturally diverse and Christ-centered.

Most recently, CUBM has embarked on a mission of reaching students of color across Pittsburgh, encouraging them to continue to strive for academic success.  CUBM has committed itself to encouraging young people to stay in school and continue their education after high school.

CUBM’s continual advancement and success reflects the organization’s ongoing commitment to delivering an innovative, challenging, and relevant education for today’s students. “Our success and longevity is due in part to the advanced capabilities and continuous improvement of our staff, curriculum, and support system,” states executive director Karla Threadgill Byrd.  The combination of a CUBM education and a Geneva College degree helps students learn to apply CUBM tools specifically and with more relevancy to their particular situations.

To kick off its anniversary celebration, CUBM will present the Pittsburgh Student Advancement Award (PSAA), created by CUBM, to high school students during a special segment of the May 12 CUBM commencement ceremony at the Eastminster Presbyterian Church at 6pm.  Special guests will include Councilman Ricky Burgess and Dr. Rockwell Dillaman. The event is free and open to the public.
